2016 September 15 Forty Green -
Royal Standard of England

Sunny and warm - just like summer is supposed to be. This is well covered ground but a new way across it. Nothing of particular note except perhaps the very high bridges (built by the Great Central Railway) carrying the Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway (now the Chiltern Line). 5.4 miles in 2 hours 10 mins.

Eleven completed the course although three deviants took a short cut towards the end. Two more joined us at the pub. A very popular pub as it was quite busy. We took a couple of tables outside but in the shade. The staff were very efficient. Five real ales available and all of them were sampled by the group. I was on Chiltern bitter and "Olde Trip" - still pretty good despite now being made in Bury St. Edmunds instead of Nottingham. Interesting that this pub claims to be "the oldest free house in England". The "Old Trip to Jerusalem" under Nottingham castle also claims to be the oldest pub (probably is) whilst the "Fighting Cocks" in St. Albans makes the same claim; although in this case, it has been rebuilt a few times.
